This module provides a comprehensive foundation in criminal procedure and evidential principles, equipping students with the knowledge and practical skills required for the effective conduct of criminal cases. It covers all stages of the criminal justice process — from investigation and charge to trial, sentencing, and appeal.
Students will study the powers of arrest and detention, bail applications, allocation of offences, trial procedure in magistrates’ and Crown Court, sentencing principles, and appeal routes. The evidence component focuses on key doctrines such as hearsay, bad character, confessions, and witness handling, with strong emphasis on the Criminal Justice Act 2003 and case law development.
By the end of the module, students will be fully prepared to apply procedural rules and evidential principles in realistic case scenarios — a critical requirement for success in the centralised Bar Standards Board assessment.
